NUTRIENT BUDGETS

A Nutrient Budget models your farm system and ultimately determines the flow of nutrients on and off the property.  The focus of a Nutrient Budget is the amount of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, sediment and faecal bacteria lost to water through leaching and run off.

For many sheep and beef farms, the loss of Nitrogen will not be an issue, however Phosphorus mitigation techniques will likely be required, which is a focus of a Farm Environmental Management Plan.

FARM ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLANS

A Farm Environmental Management Plan outlines your farm status in compliance with Unitary or Regional Council requirements and if needed, identifies what steps could be undertaken to get your property to a compliant standard.

A Farm Environmental Management Plan will become a key tool, and will likely influence the way you manage your farm into the future.  You therefore need to be sure that these plans are clear and accurate with any recommended changes having the least impact on the productivity and profitability of your farm.

The proposed changes could also be beneficial, as you may be able to manage your nutrients more efficiently and therefore create some cost savings.
